With the grass volleyball season returning soon, we'll be hosting our second official tournament: the MidDigs Spring Invitational 2026 on Saturday, April 4th. We'll announce more details soon, but you can expect a similar format and community-focused vibe 😎.
Community Guidelines
Gameplay
Scoring
- Games will go up to 21 points (win by 2), with a cap of 23 points for all non-playoff games
- Points may be replayed if there is an interference (ball on the court)
- Excessive crossing of the centerline will result in a loss of the point
Serving
- Players must follow rotation order for serving but positions are allowed
Ball Handling
- Open-hand or double-contact receive for first touch is allowed, granted that it is a single action
- Over-setting is playable as long as it is a genuine mistake - referees have the final call
Receiving
- Players may not receive a ball with open hands on serve
- Freeballs cannot be passed with open hands
- If an attack is hard driven, the player may pass with open hands so long as it is clean without excessive spin
Attacking
- No open hand tips; players must use a closed fist, knuckle, or palm to send the ball over
- When setting the ball over, your body must be squared and the ball must travel according to where your body is facing
- Players can attack from any position in the court
- There is no antenna so the allowable hitting space can exceed the court space - referees have the final call
Blocking
- Block contact does not count as one of the 3 touches
- No limit to the amount of blockers
- A blocker may not cross the plane of the net and touch the ball unless the ball is being sent over as an attack
Net
- Touching the net with any part of the body is NOT allowed
Conduct
- Respect all players, officials, and spectators
- Follow officials' decisions
- Good sportsmanship is expected at all times
- Be respectful and ask permission before using chairs or equipment that do not belong to you
- Clean up after yourself and do not litter in the park

This is a closed-group tournament only offered to members of the Big Digs or Mid-Kyu volleyball communities.
Every team consists of 4 players, and each team is determined before the tournament begins. The tournament admins will determine the teams with the goals of fair play and a fun social atmosphere.
Yes — during registration you can specify which bracket you prefer (Intermediate or Advanced) and one player you'd like to be paired with. Neither is guaranteed, but both will be taken into consideration when building teams.
This tournament will have an Intermediate and Advanced bracket of play. All players are expected to have a basic level of skill in grass 4s volleyball.
During registration you can specify your prefernce on bracket placement, however the admin team will make the final decisions for balancing the brackets. Generally speaking, Intermediate players are considered B/BB level and Advanced players are BB/A level.
Still in the early learning stages but knows the skills. Can bump, set, and spike, but not yet consistently. Makes mistakes and can't always direct passes to specific players.
7/10 passes go to the intended player. Understands rotational sequence, offensive concepts (5-1, 6-2, etc.), and defensive positions. Knows the footwork and approach for hitting effectively.
9/10 passes go to the intended player. Can run complex plays and attacks when passes are good. Game and player strategies are well understood and applied in competition.
Yes, there is a mandatory $10 registration fee for competitive play. This goes directly towards prizes for the winning teams. If you'd like to attend as a spectator or play on the casual court only. Payment details will be explained in the registration form.
We will not be providing lunch during the tournament, but instead snacks and drinks for tournament players. Please plan accordingly and bring your own food and drinks.
The first 64 confirmed competitive registrations will be secured a spot. Any registrations beyond that will be placed on a waitlist.
Absolutely! There will be one dedicated court available for casual play throughout the event, and spectators are welcome. If you'd like to attend casually or as a spectator, you have the option of purchasing a t-shirt separately — no competitive registration fee required.
